About us

Established in 1985 in the English cathedral city of Canterbury, Hinges & Brackets was started by Fred and Madeline White. Fred White was previously a builder and joiner and was finding it increasingly difficult to source a full range of proper quality ironmongery for his work. Madeline and Fred decided they could provide traditional architectural hardware with a personal service for the local building market and local DIY enthusiast.

From the start it was decided that the business would aim to gain a reputation for its quality of ironmongery, extensive range and great service. Today with this reputation secured, the company is still run by Family members and tries to maintain the same important values upon which it was founded.

Ashford. Having set up in Canterbury in a rented shop in Wincheap, Fred and Madeline decided to buy an additional bigger shop in 1988 in the Market town of Ashford. Now run by Mark Broom, our shop in Beaver Rd was previously a butchers and a Co op,but these days has an excellent reputation for its locksmith and keycutting services.

Next Maidstone. In 1992, now with all 3 White sons Alan, Chris and Andrew White and a son-in-law Martin Davey in the business, it was decided to open an even bigger shop in the county town of Maidstone. With its large car park and business spread over two floors and a warehouse adjoining, the Maidstone premises soon became the head office and stores for the other branches. Although some would say it was a crying shame to run an Ironmongers instead of the original Brenchley Arms pub from these premises!

Royal Tunbridge Wells. With Chris White ‘courting’ his future bride Angela in Tunbridge Wells a shop was bought in the Royal spa to save Chris having to travel! Situated in St Johns Rd, with a free car park nearby, Hinges & Brackets in Tunbridge Wells has gained a well earned reputation for providing high quality traditional English brassware and contemporary fittings, such as glass knobs.

Bromley on the borders. Still just officially in Kent, our most recent shop is located in London Rd in Bromley and was started way back in 1997, and the only one to be opened under a Labour government – so far! Known for its large selection of modern lever handles and fittings, the Bromley shop stocks a large range of contemporary designer ironmongery from the likes of Olivari of Italy, Manital, Cifial, as well as solid traditional English manufacturers.

Brighton is the latest addition to the Hinges & Brackets stable and our first foray into Sussex. We have the same attitude here of great service and quality architectural ironmongery. The Brighton shop also specialises in a great range of glass handles.
